Otra vez en Chile

EN - It has been a loooong while since my last post! A few things, such as my location and daily activities, have changed, so here's a short update:

I am no longer in Brazil. My volunteer service is officially over. The six months I spent in Brasilia were truly a wonderful (and hectic) experience. Looking back I can say that every single day was worth it. No regrets at all. I was able to do what I had wanted for so long: dedicate, even if only for six months, all of my time to serve, to help, to lift up, to give hugs, and share smiles for the sake of being what Jesus is to me: love.

I was also able to have that deeply needed time of "isolation and meditation". One or two significant existential questions were answered, giving me a greater peace of heart and mind.

So, if I'm no longer in Brazil, where in the world am I now?? I'm back in Chile, back in the motherland. I've returned to a sheltered life at home with mom, dad & Felipe and I absolutely love it. We live about 12km. away from a city in southern Chile, rent a small and cozy house, and enjoy each other's company daily.

I am also studying again! I'm majoring in History and Geography Education and school is kicking my butt. I love it, though. I missed cramming for exams, pulling all-nighters, writing ridiculously long papers, and reading like a maniac.

I am constantly running out of time, but I'll try to keep updating the blog once in a while.

It's good to be back :).

ES - ¡Hacía tieeeeeeempo que no escribía en el blog! Un par de cosas como mi ubicación y actividades diarias han cambiado, así que aquí los pongo al día:

Ya no estoy en Brasil. Mi período de servicio voluntario terminó oficialmente. Los seis meses que pasé en Brasilia fueron realmente una experiencia hermosa (y ajetreada). Mirando hacia atrás puedo decir que todos los días valieron la pena. No me arrepiento de nada. Tuve la oportunidad de hacer lo que quise por tanto tiempo: dedicar (aunque fuera sólo por seis meses) todo mi tiempo a servir, ayudar, construir, abrazar y compartir sonrisas para ser para otros lo que Jesús es para mí: amor.

También tuve el tiempo de "aislamiento y meditación" que tanto necesitaba. Una o dos preguntas existenciales importantes encontraron respuesta, así que ahora disfruto de una mayor paz de mente y corazón.

En fin, ¿dónde estoy ahora? Otra vez en Chile, en la madre patria. He vuelto a la vida protegida del hogar junto a mis papás & Felipe y me encanta! Vivimos aprox. a 12 km. de Chillán, arrendamos una casita acogedora, y disfrutamos de la compañía mutua todos los días. ¿Qué mejor que eso?

También estoy estudiando. Soy alumna de la carrera de Ped. en Historia y Geografía en la UNACH y la U me está matando!! Claro que me encanta. Extrañaba volverme loca estudiando, pasar noches sin dormir, escribir trabajos absurdamente largos y leer hasta en el baño.

No me alcanza el tiempo para nada, pero voy a tratar de seguir escribiendo en el blog de vez en cuando.

ES - Que ganas de gritarle al mundo, de gritarle a ustedes, de gritarle a ellos:

Pero aunque quiero, no grito, porque aunque me cortaran las alas me podría ir caminando y aunque me explicaran y entendiera podría hacer la vida en otro lugar. Así que en vez de gritar, me quedo. Me quedon con mis alas y sin entender, pero me quedo.Aquí.

Me quedo porque aquí están los fantasmas que no logro destruir, aquí despiertan los demonios que no se dejan controlar, aquí radican los recuerdos que no quieren desaparecer. Aquí.

Así que aquí me quedo para enfrentarlos, para ganarles y probar que aún los que no respetan pueden ser respetados, que las puertas cerradas se pueden echar abajo y que el valor de una persona no depende de la opinión de los demás.

No por resignación, no por falta de opciones, sino porque quiero, me quedo aquí.

EN - I would yell at the world, I would yell at you, I would yell at them, and say:

cut my wings or explain to me why here I have no worth!"

But even though I want to, I don't yell, because even if you cut my wings I could still leave walking, and even if you explained and I understood, I could still make my life somewhere else. So instead of yelling I stay, I stay with my wings and without understanding, but I stay. Here.

I stay here because this is where the ghosts that I cannot destroy are, this is where the demons that I cannot control live, this is where the memories that won't disappear are found. Here.

So I stay here to face them, to win and to prove that even those who do not respect can be respected, that closed doors can be brought down, and that a person's worth does not depend on the opinion of the rest.

Not out of resignation, not because of a lack of options, but because I want to, I stay. Here.

Ponte JK, Lago Paranoá

EN - Ponte Juscelino Kubitschek, commonly known as Ponte JK, is probably one of the most beautiful bridges I have seen at night! It is named after the president who completed the building of Brasilia and was designed by Alexandre Chan and Mario Vila Verde.

The bridge is made up of three white arches that crisscross diagonally and has a nice pedestrian walkway on each side. Senja and I took a short walk there and shot a few pictures before she flew back to Finland.

ES - El Ponte Juscelino Kubitschek, comunmente conocido como Ponte JK, es probablemente uno de los puentes más lindos que he visto de noche! Fue nombrado en honor al presidente que completó la construcción de Brasilia y fue diseñado por Alexandre Chan y Mario Vila Verde.
El puente está compuesto por tres arcos blancos que se entrecruzan diagonalmente y tiene una pasarela para peatones en cada lado. Senja y yo caminamos un poquito y tomamos algunas fotos allí antes que ella viajara a Finlandia.

EN - Lago Paranoá is the artificial lake that Ponte JK crosses. I always wondered how in the world anybody makes an artificial lake....hehe. By digging a hole till water comes up?? By takings buckets of water from the sea and transfering them elsewhere??
Apparently there is a River Paranoá on the east side of Brasilia. That river was dammed (not damned, haha) and tadah! we have the lake.

Some friends from work and I went kayaking there about one month ago. It was a lot of fun and I crossed the lake four times!! My arms were more than sore the next day but I would definately do it again. It if involves water, count me in.

ES - El Lago Paranoá es el lago artificial que el Ponte JK cruza. Siempre me he preguntado cómo miércale se hace un lago artifical...jaja. Haciendo un hoyo hasta que salga agua? Acarreando baldes de agua desde el mar?
Aparentemente existe un Rio Paranoá al este de Brasilia. Allí se construyó una represa y tarán! tenemos el lago.

Hace aproximadamente un mes unos amigos del trabajo me invitaron a andar en kayak. Lo pasé super bien y crucé el lago cuatro veces!! Al otro día tenía los brazos más que adoloridos pero lo volvería a hacer en cualquier momento. Habiendo agua yo voy.

EN - Ok, so I was supposed to update the blog every Monday. I guess that didn't work...hehe, but here are some interesting facts and pictures:

• According to a legend, in 1883 the Italian saint Don Bosco had a prophetic dream in which he described a city that roughly fits Brasilia's location.
  
• Brasilia was planned in 1956, with Lucio Costa as the main urban planner and Oscar Niemeyer as the principal architect.
• Brasilia has the shape of a plane or butterfly.
• Brasilia was built in 41 months. The construction workers came from all over Brazil, but mostly from the Northeastern region. They populated the Midwest of the country.
  
• Brasilia is the only city in the world built in the 20^th century to be awarded the status of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

ES – Se suponía que iba a actualizar el blog todos los lunes. Está claro que no me resultó…jeje…pero por lo menos aquí van algunos datos y fotos interesantes:

• Dice la leyenda que en 1883 el santo italiano Don Bosco tubo un sueño profético en el que describió una cuidad que calza con la ubicación de Brasilia.
• Brasilia fue planificada en 1956, con Lucio Costa como urbanista y Oscar Niemeyer como arquitecto.
• Brasilia tiene la forma de un avión o mariposa.
• Brasilia fue construida en 41 meses. Los trabajadores vinieron de todo Brasil, especialmente de la región Nordeste. Ellos poblaron el Centro-Oeste del país.
• Brasilia es la única ciudad del mundo construida en el siglo 20 que ganó el estatus de Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad de la UNESCO.

Teatro Nacional - Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro

EN - Brasilia's Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro (national theater) was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and is his greatest work destined solely to the arts. It has the shape of a pyramid with no apex (tip), which is typical of aztec architecture.The theater was built in several stages, beginning on July 30, 1961 and was finished on April 21, 1981.

The Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro was founded in 1980, playing under the conduction of (yepp, you guessed right) maestro Claudio Santoro. The current artistic director and maestro is Ira Levin (check out his reviews).

The orquestra has a free concert every Tuesday night at 8:00 pm. so I go there whenever I can! The music is absolutely beautiful and...I have a crush on maestro Levin (hahaa..he's too awsome!). After every concert I come home knowing I want to marry a musician one day. By word of mouth I found out he is one of the five musicians who have a ridiculously well developed visual memory. Mestro Levin is a genious. He can see the music sheets for any piece, not read them or hear the music again for years, and bring them back to his mind at any point of time.

He has conducted orquestras all over Europe, such as the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, Duisburg Philarmonic, Bruckner Orquestra Linz, Badische Staaskapelle, and the orchestras of the operas of Dublin, Montpellier, and Oslo. He also conducted the National Symphony Orchestra of Taipei, and Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra. Absolutely brilliant!

Now going back to the concerts, I particularly liked the one from March 24, in honor to the bicentenary of Joseph Haydn's (1732-1809) passing. Antonio Del Claro, violoncello solist, interpreted Violoncello Concerto in C Major, Hob. VIIb.1.

ES - El Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro de Brasilia fue diseñado por Oscar Niemeyer y es su mayor obra dedicada exclusivamente a las artes. El teatro tiene la forma de una pirámide sin punta, lo que es típico de la arquitectura azteca. Éste fue construido en varias etapas, comenzando el 30 de julio de 1961, y fue concluido el 21 de abril de 1981.

La Orquesta Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro fue fundada en 1980, bajo la conducción de (sip, adivinaron bien) el maestro Claudio Santoro. El director artístico y maestro titular actual es Ira Levin.

La orquesta tiene un concierto gratis todos los martes a las 20:00 hrs. así que voy cada vez que puedo. La música es realmente hermosa….y me gusta el maestro Levin (pa´variar..jajaa..). Después de cada concierto vuelvo a mi casa con la convicción de que algún día me voy a casar con un músico. Me contaron que el maestro es uno de los cinco músicos en el mundo que tienen una memoria visual extremadamente bien desarrollada. Levin es un genio. Él puede ver las partituras de cualquier pieza, no leerlas o escuchar la música por años, y recordar la partitura a la perfección en cualquier momento.

Él ha dirigido orquestas en toda Europa, incluyendo la Orquesta Estatal Sajona de Desde, la Orquesta Gewandhaus de Leipzig, la Orquesta Sinfónica de Düsseldorf, la Filarmónica de Duisburg, la Orquesta Bruckner de Linz, la Orquesta Estatal de Baden, y las orquestas de las óperas de Dublin, Montpellier y Oslo. También dirigió la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Taipei, y la Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires. ¡Es un tipo brillante!

Ahora, volviendo a los conciertos, me gustó mucho el del 24 de marzo, en honor al bicentenario del fallecimiento de Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Antonio Del Claro, solista en violonchelo, interpretó el Concierto para Violonchelo en Do Mayor, Hob. VIIb.1.
